OBITUARY ~ CHARLES OMER "CHUCK" CALHOUN
Charles Omer CALHOUN, son of Percy C. and Esther L. (PORTER) CALHOUN, was born March 3, 1926 near Allendale, Missouri
where he helped with the family farm. Charles, or Chuck as he was also known, graduated high school at Sheridan, Missouri.
Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp on August 12, 1944 and was honorably discharged on August 12, 1946. On February
1, 1947, Chuck was united in marriage to Mary Patricia GUARINO in Boston, Massachusetts. Chuck and Mary lived in
Massachusetts where he was a jeweler and also worked as a union brick layer. They returned to the Mount Ayr area in
Chuck first worked for the City of Mount Ayr. He then began a career at Harvey Brothers as a mechanic and served
as the service manager for several years. Chuck would enter back into the construction business as well as operating
the local concrete business. For the next several years, Calhoun Construction did the concrete and brick work on
projects that can be seen all over Mount Ayr and the surrounding area. Chuck employed several young men and mentored
them as well as gave them a job. To his crew he was fondly known as "Cheez."
Chuck raced a car at the Mount Ayr Speedway.
He served on the Mount Ayr city council and was a fireman on the Mount Ayr fire department. Chuck was a member of the
American Legion and V.F.W.
Chuck passed away on October 17, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary
CALHOUN on May 20, 2001; daughter, Diane McGAHUEY; brother, Jack CALHOUN, and sister, Janice Maxine ECKERLE and her

husband Kirk of Mount Ayr, Iowa; son-in-law, Terry McGAHUEY of Marshalltown, Iowa; grandchildren, Troy (LaRae)
McGAHUEY, Andrea HARRYMAN, Angela CALHOUN, Anthony CALHOUN, Megan CALHOUN, Parker CALHOUN, Jordan COONEY, Tauri
COONEY, Kelsey (Brett) HILDEBRAND, Chance (Wendy) GREENMAN, Courtnie COX (Tyler VENN)and Austin COX;
great-grandchildren, Aleigha HARRYMAN, Raelene McGAHUEY, Raechel McGAHUEY, Jayden CALHOUN and Drake COX VENN;
brother, Paul (Louise) CALHOUN of Atlantic, Iowa; sister-in-law, Marilyn CALHOUN of Grant City, Missouri;
nieces; nephews; other relatives, and friends.
A memorial fund has been established in his name to be
decided later. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr is in charge of the arrangements.
held at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr on Monday, October 22, 2012, with Rev. Skip RUSHING officiating.
Musicians included Deb CANNON and Simply Voices.
Casket bearers were Troy McGAHUEY, Anthony CALHOUN, Parker CALHOUN,
Jordan COONEY, Chance GREENMAN and Austin COX.
Military rites were by Ringgold Post #172 and Marine Corp
Funeral Honors. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr.
