Mary Ellen HAYES was born April 11, 1919 in Omaha, NE, the youngest of seven children born to Mary Jane TAYLOR &
Samuel HAYES. As a young girl, she attended school in New Market and Bedford. Having to quit school before
graduating due to the need to stay home and take care of her ailing mother.
On March 29, 1938, she married Leland Eugene DUGAN in Bedford, IA and they established their home in Maloy. Most of
her earlier years of marriage were devoted to raising her family and helping her husband, Leland, in his trucking
and feed business. In later years, she helped out as a cook at the Maloy Consolidated School and then worked at the
Grant City and Mount Ayr Cap Factory before retiring. She belonged to and was one of the founders of the Maloy Town
& Country Club. In early years they lived next to the Maloy Christian Church and in the summer, when Bible School or
a revival was going on, and the teachers or ministers came from other towns, she would prepare and serve meals to
them. She and Leland were the parents of four children; Betty Lou, Barbara Ann, Eddie Lee, and Michael Allen. Even
though she was busy with her family and gardening and canning for her family she always had time to crochet, knit,
do ceramics, quilting and lots of other crafts. All of her children along with some of the grandchildren have been
recipients of quilts, crocheting tablecloths, doilies and other crafts she had made. She was very capable of doing
very intricate hand work on such things as the many dolls she made and especially the bride and groom dolls. She and
Leland spent several winters in Texas, which she enjoyed very much and has many fond memories of time spent there
and friends made. In November, 1993, she and Leland moved to Mount Ayr, where she has resided. In May, 2002, she
moved into Maple Ridge Assisted Living and in October 2006, to Mount Ayr Health Care Center. She loved every one of
the workers and considered them all as part of her family. One of the highlights of her stay there was being able to
tease and have fun with all of them. Mary Ellen passed away at the Health Care Center on July 3, 2008.
