The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1928

OBITUARY - J. A. P. DINKEL.

J.A.P. Dinkel gravestone.jpg

This community was greatly saddened Monday morning to learn of the death of "Dad" DINKEL, as he was affectionately known to his many friends. The end came at 10 o'clock Sunday evening, November 4, 1928, at the home six miles south of Diagonal. Mr. DINKEL had been in failing health for some time and about two weeks previous to his death his health conditions became serious and therefore his death was not unexpected.

At the time of his death Mr. DINKEL was 84 years and two days of age. J. A. P. DINKEL, the son of Harvey and Jestine Ann DINKEL, was born in Rockingham county, VA., on November 2, 1844, and was the oldest of a family of thirteen children, five of whom have preceded him in death. He came with his parents to Cedar county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood and on October 15, 1865, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Jane ABRAMS, also of Cedar county. To this union was born five children - J. A. DINKEL of Albany, Oregon, who so lately preceded him in death; Gertrude YASHACK and H. A. DINKEL of Benton, Iowa; and Herman and Freddie who are deceased. His good wife passed to her reward some eight years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. DINKEL and family with his brother, Michael E., came to Ringgold county in the year of [illegible] locating at Mount Ayr and two years later he and his family moved to the farm where he has lived continously since and where he died. His brother located on a farm nearby, moving to Benton, where he died about four years ago.

The death of Mr. DINKEL marks the passing of the last of the orginal DINKEL family in this community. He was a man of sterling character, an example of true integrity and honesty and he had lived a well rounded out life. As has been said of him, he never spoke evil of anyone, but could always see some good in everybody. He was a friend and neighbor in every sense of the word.

Mr. DINKEL was a member of the Methodist church of Diagonal and while not a regular attendant of the services because of infirmities of age, he was a faithful contributor to the needs of the church as well as at all things helpful in the community. He will be greatly missed, not alone by his loved ones, but by all friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. E. MATHENY, pastor of the Diagonal Methodist church from the home Tuesday afternoon where a large number of his friends attended the last sad rites. Burial was made at the Marshalltown cemetery, seven miles south of Diagonal [near Benton]. --Diagonal Reporter

Card of Thanks.

To all the friends and neighbors whose sympathy and services were so kindly given in our bereavement, we desire to extend our sincere thanks; also we wish to express our appreciation for the beautiful flowers. --Mr. and Mrs. Harry DINKEL and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. YASHACK and family.
