OBITUARY - ELIAS S. COWELL

Elias S. COWELL was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, May 13, 1841, and lived there during the early period of his life. October 20, 1867, he was united in marriage to Mary WILDMAN and to this union eight children were born, four of who - William, Wayne and Frank and Mrs. Artie MATTHEWS - are deceased. Those who survive are Jier COWELL (sic) of Mount Ayr, Alven (sic, should be Alvin M. "Allie") COWELL of Clearfield, Sadie of Omaha, Neb., and Clyde at home. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He passed away after a short illness October 14, 1927, aged 86 years and five months.

During the early part of his life he united with the church and lived a quiet, sober life. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Ringgold and Taylor counties. His upright life commanded the respect of his fellowmen. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor and a loving husband and father.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church, being conducted by F. D. AUGUSTINE, and the body was laid to rest in the Maloy [Platte River] cemetery.

NOTE: Wayne COWELL, son of Elias S. and Mary (WILDMAN) was born on November 8, 1872 and died April 16, 1922. He was interred at Platte River Cemetery. Frank E. COWELL, son of Elias S. and Mary (WILDMAN), was born on September 30, 1882 and died on December 5, 1916; interment at Platte River Cemetery. Artie B. (COWELL) MATTHEWS, daughter of Elias S. and Mary (WILDMAN), wife of A. J. MATTHEWS (1872-1961), was born on January 13, 1878, and died July 22, 1917; both Artie and A. J. interred Platte River Cemetery. Jair W. COWELL was born in 1879 and died in 1949 with interment at Platte River Cemetery. Alvin M. COWELL, son of Elias S. and Mary (WILDMAN), was born in 1874 and died in 1949 with interment at Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa. Clyde "Peanut" COWELL, son of Elias S. and Mary (WILDMAN), was born in 1885 and died in 1963. He was interred at Platte River Cemetery, Ringgold County, Iowa.
