OBITUARY - CALLISTA (SHAY) CONWELL

Callista SHAY CONWELL (101) passed away February 19, 1988, at County Hospital in Basin, Wyoming. Suffering from pneumonia, she had been a patient there for three weeks.

Callista was born September 1, 1886, to Thomas and Rosa SHAY near Maloy, Iowa. After attendance of SHAY School (BOZARIS), she spent two years at Mount Saint Scholastica Academy in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin.

On June 27, 1916, she married Edward "Ned" CONWELL of Grand River. Following their marriage, the young couple lived in Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas and Missouri before settling in Red Lodge, Montana, in 1921.

Red Lodge then was the center of a thriving copper mining industry. Mr. CONWELL, an attorney, practiced law there until his death in 1959.

Callista lived in Red Lodge until the late 1970's when she moved to Greybull, Wyoming to make her home with her eldest daughter, Mary HUDAK.

She celebrated her 100th birthday there on September 1, 1986. She enjoyed remarkably good health and was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Greybull.

In January she was admitted to the hospital in Basin where she passed away.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers: William (1956), Leo (1961), Robert (1983) and Thomas (1954).

Survivors include her five children: Mary (Mrs. Stephen HUDAK) of Graybull, Wyoming; Rose (Mrs. Neil SULLIVAN), Butte, Montana; Edward (wife Emelie), Portland, Oregon; Margaret (Mrs. Leo HEYD), Billings, Montana; Robert (wife Frances), Red Lodge, Montana; 18 granchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Obsequies were held on February 22, at Sacred Heart Church in Greybull with graveside services and burial in Red Lodge.
