OBITUARY - NORA LORENE (WIMER) COMBS
Nora Lorene WIMER COMBS, a resident of the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Monticello, Iowa passed away at
St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on July 24, 2001.
Lorene was born the daughter of Albert Mitchell WIMER and Helen Maude AGLER WIMER on July 27, 1913 near Mount Ayr, Iowa.
On July 29, 1933 she was married to Arnold Raymond COMBS in Maryville, Missouri. He died on August 29, 1988 in Mount Ayr,
Lorene graduated from Mount Ayr high school and had advanced college work through Northwest Missouri State Teachers
College in Maryville, Missouri. Lorene was a teacher during World War II and then went on to be a salesperson for the
Anthony's Department Store in Mount Ayr for some 25 years. Later Lorene managed a furniture store in Mount Ayr for nearly
10 years, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars
Auxiliary, Rebecca Lodge, Royal Neighbors of America and the Gray Lady Volunteers. Lorene was an avid bridge player,
loved crocheting, quilting and ceramics. Her memory will be loved and cherished by her family, her friends, students and
Lorene was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Marilyn Ann COMBS GILES; her mother and father; and a brother and
sister, John Welma WIMER and Velma J. WIMER KIMBALL.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Helen SHELDEN and husband Ray of Marion, Iowa; her son, John COMBS of Houston,
Texas; grandchildren: Andrea SCHINDLER and husband John and Caprice SHELDEN, all of Marion, Iowa; Jerry COMBS and wife
Shayne and Terri STRONG and husband Don, all of Houston, Texas; John GILES and wife Cindy of Jacksonville, North Carolina;
Dena KOTHE and husband Jim of Denver, Colorado; one niece, JoAnn KRALY and husband Frank of Denver, Colorado; 12
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 27, 2001 at the Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa with
Rev. Mike EIGHMY officiating. Musicians were Ginny EIGHMY and Ed and Kathy SHIELDS.
Casket bearers were Jerry COMBS, John GILES, Meghan REDD, John SCHINDLER, Malcolm EIGHMY and Dustin EIGHMY. Honorary
pallbearers were Jim KOTHE, Dalton SCHINDLER, Jarred COMBS, Bailey SCHINDLER, Don STRONG, Max McGEHEE and Bernard
Lorene was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa.
