OBITUARY - ARNOLD RAYMOND COMBS

Arnold Raymond COMBS, son of Lawrence and Dora Blanche (JONES) COMBS, was born October 18, 1922, at Allendale, Missouri, and passed away August 29, 1988, in his home at the age of 76 years 11 months and 20 days.

Arnold moved to Mount Ayr with his family in 1918 where he lived the remainder of his life. On July 29, 1944 he was united in marriage to Nora Lorene WIMER at Maryville, Missouri.

Arnold was active throughout the community, serving in the Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years. He was in World War II as a staff sergeant in the Medical Corp. stationed in Europe from April 16, 1944 until Feb. 7, 1946, receiving an honorable discharge. Upon his return from the service of his country he was active in the American Legion, serving a term as Commander. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He belonged to the Mount Ayr Christian Church for 50 years.

Arnold worked as a mechanic at the Chevrolet and Ford Garages in Mount Ayr, as a carpenter and as a Rural Mail Carrier, for 25 years until his retirement on November 1, 1985.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence COMBS; one brother, Dennis COMBS; one daughter, Marilyn COMBS GILES, and one grandson, John Russell COMBS.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene COMBS of Mount Ayr; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Ray SHELDEN of Marion, Iowa; one son, John COMBS of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren, Andrea SCHINDLER and Caprice REDD of Marion, Iowa, Terry LANE of Houston, Texas, Jerry COMBS of Cartersville, Georgia, and Dina and John Shannon GILES of Loughton, Colo.; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois MOSBARGER of Bettendorf, Iowa, Madge RUSH (Mrs. Dwight) of Greeley, Colorado, and Mildred EIGHMY (Mrs. Melvis) of Mount Ayr; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held August 31, 1988, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Doris KINTON. Music was provided by Mike GREENE, Ed SHIELDS and Mrs. Ronald SHIELDS.

Casketbearers were Mike REDD, Max McGEHEE, Jerry COMBS, Malcolm EIGHMY, John SCHINDLER and John Shannon GILES. Honorary pallbearers were Loren LAMB, Jack HARTMAN, F. E. McNEILEY, Carroll GEIST, ELbert STRANGE, Ronald SHIELDS, Earl SCHARDEIN and Everett REYNOLDS.

Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr, Iowa. Military graveside rites were conducted by Ringgold Post #172, American Legion.

OBITUARY - ARNOLD COMBS, Mount Ayr

MOUNT AYR - Arnold COMBS, 76, of Mount Ayr died Monday morning, Aug. 29, 1988, at his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson-Watson Funeral home here. The Rev. Doris KENTON will officiate with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr. A family night will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 today. He was a membre of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Ringgold Post 172.

Mr. COMBS was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Allendale, Mo., to Lawrence and Dora Blanche (JONES) COMBS. He married Lorene WIMER on July 29, 1933, in Maryville, MO. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr, American Legion Ringgold Post 172, long-time member of Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department. He was a rural mail carrier for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene of Mount Ayr; a son, John of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Helen (Mrs. Ray) SHELDEN of Marion; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lois MOSBARGER of Bettendorf, Madgie (Mrs. Dwight) RUSH of Greeley, Colo., and Mildred (Mrs. Melvis) EIGHMY of Mount Ayr.
