MARTIN CLAYTON BLEW OUT THE GAS
Martin CLAYTON, a brother of Peter CLAYTON (1832-1924), came with his wife and children to Ringgold County in 1881. He bought a
farm three miles east of Mount Ayr.
In February of 1902, he went back to Ohio to visit a sick brother at Jackson
Center. His train only took him to Lima, Ohio, twenty miles from his destination, so he went to a hotel to spend
the night. He had never had any experience with "gas" so he blew out the gas light, and went to bed. The next
morning, February 14, 1902, he was found dead.
He had five daughters and one son, John. John was married and had
four daughtes and one son. he went to St. Joseph to Work, and fell down an elevator shaft and was killed July 9, 1911.
Mrs. CLAYTON died near Mount Ayr, February 15, 1937, at the age of 84 years. Her five daughters survive.
NOTE: Uri "Martin" CLAYTON was born in 1835. Mary Elizabeth CLAYTON was born in 1852, and died February 15, 1937. They were
interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
