The Mount Ayr Record-News, 1931

DEATH of Mrs. PETER CLATON

The community was saddened Friday morning upon learning of the death of Mrs. Peter CLATON, 90 years of age, who had been a resident of Ringgold county for the past fifty-seven years and who had made Mount Ayr her home for more than sixteen years.

Elizabeth Cynthia BELKNAP was born in Licking county, Ohio, October 22, 1840, and died at her home in Mount Ayr Friday morning, March 13, 1931, at the age of 90 years, four months and 21 days.

She moved with her parents to Bureau county, Illinois, in the year 1854. On December 25, 1864, she was united in marriage to Peter T. CLATON and to this union six children were born. They moved to Ringgold county the first of March, 1874, and lived in Liberty township until March, 1915, when they moved to Mount Ayr.

She was converted and joined the Methodist church when a girl and always was a devoted member. She attended regularly until prevented by infirmities incident to old age.

She was preceded in death by her husband [in 1924]. Those remaining to mourn her death are the three daughters, Alvira E. MAIN of Mount Ayr, Gertrude MATHENY of Beaconsfield, Edith HARSH of Centerville; three sons, Melvin L. of Central City, Neb., Willard O. of Portland, Ore., and John W. of Lathrop, Calif.; 22 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Mount Ayr Sunday afternoon, at 2:30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. S. MENOHER, and interment was in Rose Hill cemetery [Mount Ayr].

Relatives from a distance who were in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. M. L. CLATON of Central City, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Frank BELKNAP of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Laura HARBERT of Columbus, Neb., Mrs. Lide KOCHENDERFER of Silver City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Claude HARSH and daughters Neva, Ada, Alta, Viola, and Wilma of Centerville, Mr. and Mrs. Fred TRIMBLE of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest KELLEY of Clarinda, and Miss Dorothy MAIN of Swan, Iowa.

Card of Thanks.

We take this means of expressing thanks to the many friends for their kindness during the illness and on the occasion of the death and funeral of our dear mother.
