Paonia, Colorado
March 30, 1939

OBITUARY - CHARLES WILBUR CLARK

Charles Wilbur CLARK, eldest son of Isaac and Amanda (BUCHANAN) CLARK, was born near Ottumwa, Iowa, February 15, 1866. He received his education in the schools of that city, later moving with his parents to Leon, Iowa, where he and his father owned and operated a farm. Mr. Clark was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth SCHLAPIA at Delphos, Iowa, December 24, 1890, and at that place they established their home on a farm. Later he engaged in mercantile business. In February, 1906, he and his family came to Paonia [Colorado]. For a time he owned and operated the old Dorrance coal mine but being interested in fruitgrowing, he farmed several orchards in the valley. Early in life Mr. CLARK united with the Christian church, in which he was an active worker. At the time of his death he was affiliated with the Federated church of Paonia. He joined the Odd Fellows lodge 45 years ago and was an active member of Mt. Lamborn lodge in Paonia, also being a member of the Masonic order here.

A direct descendant of the BUCHANAN clan, his maternal grandfather and James BUCHANAN, fifteenth President of the United States, were brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters. He leaves besides his widow, two daughters - Mrs. V.N. Lawrence and Mrs. Francis GILL, and one sister, Mrs. A. O. SRUCKER, all of Paonia.

Mr. CLARK was a lover of children and flowers and to the little folk of the community he was affectionately known as "Uncle Charlie." His death occurred Tuesday evening, March 21, 1939. Funeral service Thursday afternoon was followed by burial in Bethlehem cemetery [Paonia, Colorado].

NOTE: Family historians and genealogists believe that Charles Wilbur CLARK's maternal great-grandfather was a brother to President James BUCHANAN's father and the obituary is in error.
