OBITUARY - ORLEY A. CHEERS

Orley A. CHEERS, 90, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Afton, died October 30, 2006, at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 2, at Afton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Karen GARRISON will officiate the service. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today with family receiving friends 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. today at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. Memorials will be established in his name.

Orley CHEERS, son of Sarah Louisa (FLOHRA) and Frank CHEERS, was born May 4, 1916, in Afton. He graduated from Arispe High School in 1935.

On October 6, 1940, Orley married Gladys Charlotte NELSON in Newman Grove, Neb. He lived and farmed in the Afton and Arispe communities, later moving into Afton in 1969. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator, and later with Spencer Oil Company and Afton Farmers Co-op. During retirement, he drove a special-needs van for East Union Schools. Orley was a member of Afton United Methodist Church and served on the Greenlawn Cemetery Board 17 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Charlene (husband Larry) FORD of Tingley, Marilyn (husband Gary) MADDOX of Warsaw, Mo., Myrna (husband Robert) FORD of Omaha, Neb., and Cindy (husband Blaine) LEINEN of Council Bluffs; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Orley was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2005; daughter Linda Lea; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Hazel CHEERS; and great grandson Jacob HAUER.
