OBITUARY - GLADYS CHARLOTTE (NELSON) CHEERS

Gladys Charlotte CHEERS, 89, of Mount Ayr, formerly of Afton, died September 17, 2005, at Mount Ayr Health Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 20, at Afton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Karen GARRISON and the Rev. Edward SHIELDS will officiate the services. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton. Open visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today with the family to receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., Afton. Memorials may be directed to Afton United Methodist Church Sunday School (Wednesday school) or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Mrs. CHEERS, daughter of Mabel Ellen (ANDERSON) and Gust Adolph NELSON, was born August 9, 1916, in Newman Grove, Neb. She attended school in Madison County, Neb.

On October 6, 1940, she married Orley CHEERS in Newman Grove, Neb. They later settled in Arispe. She was a homemaker and mother. In 1969, she moved to Afton were she was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Martha Circle. She also sang in the choir. She was a former member of the Merry Menders Club and volunteer at Afton Care Center.

Survivors include her husband, Orley CHEERS of Mount Ayr; four daughters, Charlene (husband Larry) FORD of Tingley, Marilyn (husband Gary) MADDOX of Warsaw, Mo., Myrna (husband Robert) FORD of Omaha Neb., and Cindy (husband Blaine) LEINEN of Council Bluff; two brothers, DeLayne (wife VernaBelle) NELSON of Newman Grove, Neb., and AlDean (wife Lois) NELSON of Marion; one sister, Cleo (husband Eugene "Gene") HANSON of Wakefield, Mich.; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Linda Lea CHEERS.

NOTE: Orley CHEERS died at the age of 90 on October 30, 2006, Ringgold County Hospital, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
