DEATH of MRS. SARAH M. CHANCE
Mrs. Sarah M. (LEWIS) CHANCE, one of Ringgold county's highly respected pioneer women, died about five o'clock yesterday
morning [November 11, 1931] at her home in northwest Mount Ayr. At the time of her death she was past 82 years of age. [Sarah
was born on August 28, 1849.] Mrs. CHANCE had been in failing health for some time, but maintained her mental facilities until
Mrs. CHANCE, formerly Miss Sarah M. LEWIS, was united in marriage to
Dorington CHANCE in March, 1868 and they
settled on a farm in Washington township. To this union six children, four daughters and two sons, were born.
She is survived
by three daughters and one son. Her husband, one daughter and one son preceded her in death.
Funeral arrangements had not
been announced at the time the Record-News went to press.
NOTE: Sarah M. (LEWIS) CHANCE was interred at Oak Ridge
Cemetery near Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. Dorington CHANCE, husband of Sarah M. (LEWIS) was born in October, 1835 and
died March 12, 1917. He was interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery near Mount Ayr.

OBITUARY ~ MRS. SARAH M. CHANCE.
Sarah M. LEWIS was born August 28, 1849, in Cattaraugus county, near Buffalo, N. Y. She was the daughter of Nelson and
Elizabeth LEWIS. She came to Iowa withher parents in the early sixties.
On March 12, 1868, she was united in marriage
to Dorington CHANCE who preceeded her in death 15 years ago. To this union six children, four daughters and two sons,
were born: Myra L. (Mrs. J. C. GOODWIN) of Mount Ayr; Mary E. (Mrs. A. M. JOHNSTON) deceased; William Franklin,
deceased; Oliver Henderson, Clarinda; Theresa Jane (Mrs. J. J. CRISCO) of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Colette JENSEN
of Long Beach, Calif.
Mrs. CHANCE was grandmother to eleven grandchildren and eighteen great granchildren, all of
Three brothers survive her, namely: Clifford C. LEWIS and Alfred E. LEWIS of Greeley, Colo.; William
A. LEWIS of Ford City, Mo. Two brothers and two sissters preceded her in death.
Mrs. CHANCE passed away at her
home in Mount Ayr on November 11, at the age of 82 years, two months and 13 days.
She had been a resident of
Mount Ayr for more than 63 years. For 45 years she was a member of the United Presbyterian church. She leaves to friends
the memory of a long life beautifully lived.
Funeral services were held at Rhoades Funeral Home Sunday, November 15, at
2:30, conducted by Rev. Jesse JOHNSON, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. E. S. MENOHER, pastor
of the Methodist church, and interment made in Oak Ridge cemetery._________
