OBITUARY - WAYNE ORVILLE CARTER
Wayne Orville CARTER was born October 17, 1913 in Creston, Iowa, the son of Ray and Grace (KINSER) CARTER.
Following the deaths of his parents in 1918 and 1922 he resided with other relatives.
On December 24, 1937 he
married Violet Ruth TURNBULL in Creston, Iowa. They resided several places before settling in Diagonal, Iowa, where
their two daughters were born.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943 through 1945, including service
in Normandy and Central Europe.
In 1957 he moved his family to Mount Ayr, Iowa. Until his retirement he worked as
custodian in the Mount Ayr Community Schools.
He was preced in death by one sister, Ruth CARTER SHUCK; his parents, and
his beloved wife, Violet, on Nov. 6, 1984. After his wife's death he moved to Versailles, Missouri to be with his
youngest daughter. For the past several months he had been a resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home due to failing
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Mary Kathleen and husband, Don DILLON of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and
Carolyn Jean and husband, Bill JONES of Versailles, Missouri; one brother, Lloyd CARTER and wife, Edna, of Edgewater,
Florida, and one sister, Phrania MITCHELL and husband, Loren, of Riverside, California; three grandsons, Michael and
James DILLON, and Matthew JONES, and sister-in-law, Mildred TURNBULL and husband Harold; several nieces and nephews;
a host of friends and relatives; and Diane CONN of Henderson, Iowa, who was like a third daughter to him.
years at the Mount Ayr School he enjoyed working around the young people and tried to be a special friend to those who were
having problems either at school, or in their home lives.
He enjoyed the outdoors, and spent many happy hours hunting or
fishing, birdwatching, or just enjoying nature. He was also an avid reader.
He will be sadly missed by those who knew
A memorial fund has been established in his and his late wife's names to provide a scholarship for a student
entering the registered nursing profession.
Funeral services were held January 17, 1987, from the Wilson-Watson
Funeral Home at Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Ed KAIL. Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Merrill PERRY.
Casketbearers were James HAVER, Gerald YOUNG, Chester ROED, Merrill PERRY, Raymond WALTER and William HOHLFELD.
Burial was in the Diagonal Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa. Military graveside rites were by Ringgold Post #172, American Legion.
