OBITUARY - MARY PATRICIA (GUARINO) CALHOUN
Mary Patricia CALHOUN was born November 12, 1928 to Conchetto and Sebastiana (GIUFREDDA) GUARINO, Italian immigrants, in
Boston, Massachusetts. Mary grew up in Boston and after finishing school, worked for Grant's Department Store.
Mary met her Marine husband, Charles O. Calhoun, when he was aboard the USS Philippine Sea, docked at Boston Harbor.
Charles and Mary were married on February 1, 1947 in Boston. Then in 1953, Charles, Mary and their young daughter, Diane
moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa. They settled into the Mount Ayr community, where she and Charles were blessed with two sons,
Steve and Mark, and two more daughters, Lisa and Laurie.
Mary was fond of gardening and in the evenings she could be seen walking around her flower beds or enjoying a peaceful
reprieve sitting on the front porch. Mary also loved to cook, and was famous for her spaghetti as well as her general
kitchen generosity. Mary's grandchildren were always spoiled when at Grandma's house.
Mary was visited often by the nuns of the local parish, which was always a highlight for her, especially during the last
few years as Mary's health kept her home-bound. The beautiful stained glass window that Mary chose to dedicate in her
daughter, Diane McGAHUEY's, memory was placed in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mount Ayr. However, the day it was
installed, Mary was in the hospital in Des Moines. When Mary was discharged to Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr,
the local emergency personnel drove Mary to the church and carried her by gurney into the church to view the completed
window. This touched Mary deeply.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Diane McGAHUEY; brothers Vincent and Joseph; and a sister
