OBITUARY ANDREW J. HESS

Hess gravestone.jpgCivil War Flags.jpg Andrew J. HESS, born in Pennsylvania, September 7, 1831, died at Dallas Center, Iowa, June 14, 1900, aged 68 years, 0 months and 7 days.

When a young man he moved with his parents to Knox County, OH, where he met and afterward married, on March 4 1851, Margaret NYHART, which union lasted until his death. In the fall of 1865, after a year's service in the Union Army of the Civil War [Company E of the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry], the family moved to Union Township, Ringgold County, where they have since resided.

To Andrew J. and Margaret HESS were born the following children now deceased: Margaret Florence, William Artie, and Noah B. [died October 2, 1893, interment Ellston Cemetery]. Besides his wife, seven daughters and three sons are left behind: Mrs. Geo. W. OLIVER, Seattle, Washington; Mrs. Sibyl Samantha HOBBS, Ellston, Iowa; Mrs. Wm. B. GILREATH, Grand River, Iowa; Mrs. T. T. JOHNSTON, Jacob E. HESS, Ellston, Iowa; Mrs. Rilla S. BUCK, Mrs. H. E. GOULD, Mrs. Hiram ROUTT, Dallas Center, Iowa; Lewis W. HESS, Ellston, Iowa; Dave HESS, Chicago, Illinois.

Hess gravestone.jpg On Saturday morning at 10:30 a large concourse of relatives and friends payed their last respects to the deceased, Mr. HESS, whose funeral services were conducted in the Evangelical Church in this city. Rev. PARDEE offered prayer, aft which the sermon was preached by Rev. KNIES. Interment was made in the Ellston Cemetery where the last sad rites were completed.

Mr. HESS was one of the pioneer settlers and was a highly respected citizen. Those that are bereaved of the dear one; mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.

NOTE: Margaret (NYHART) HESS was born on November 17, 1832, and died on September 8, 1900.
