Thursday, December 31, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Mount Ayr will have a new business beginning Monday, Jan. 4. That’s when the Spec Shoppe will open in the former Brand's TV building at 204 N. Taylor. The Spec Shoppe offers eye examinations and eyeglasses. Opticians are Gordon S. MONK, owner, and Jeff FARNAN, associate. Serving as staff opthalmologist is Dr. S. CHAVALA, M.D. MONK also has Spec Shoppe locations in Bethany, MO, Princeton, MO and Maryville, MO.

Mount Ayr Oil Co. of Mount Ayr has a new owner, effective December 22. Lynn RINEHART of Mount Ayr, formerly a partner in Ringgold Concrete and Masonry, has purchased the Phillips service station from Sierp Oil Co. in Atlantic. This is the first time in some 33 years that the station has been owned locally.

The late Virgil FRENCH of rural Bedford has been presented an Iowa Wildlife Farmer of the Year award program by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The award was presented to Mrs. Norma FRENCH, a former Mount Ayr resident, by Mel MOE, wildlife biologist from Mount Ayr. In presenting the award, MOE noted that the diverse farming practices on the FRENCH farm have provided winter cover, food and travel lanes for a variety of wildlife species and that planting of trees and shrubs has also been beneficial to small non-game birds. FRENCH, who died this past year, donated 80 acres of wildlife habitat in Gay township in Taylor county, 16 miles west of Mount Ayr, to the state of Iowa and this land will be managed by the Taylor County Conservation Board.

Three Ringgold county communities are among 18 Region XIV cities or counties submitting applications for Community Development Block Grants for 1988. Kellerton, Diagonal and Mount Ayr all have made application for part of $13 million available throughout the state. The city of Kellerton has made an application for funds to help with a project of sanitary sewer lagoon and sidewalk improvements. Total projected cost of their plan is $56,850. The city of Diagonal has submitted a plan for $170,000 in housing rehabilitation work. The city of Mount Ayr has submitted a plan for $508,500 in sewer treatment plant improvements. Word is to be received back on the granting of money in March.
