RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 30, 1964

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

The names of six finalists in the essay writing contest, sponsored by Rideta Electric Cooperative, were announced by Eldon L. MAIN, manager. Juniors, whose essay were on the subject "Rural Electric Co-ops -- Good for All Americans," qualified them for final consideration by a committee of judges, are Marilyn PEPPMEIER, Shannon City, East Union Community high school; Lynda McFARLAND, Decatur, Leon Community high school; Nancy DUFTY, Kellerton, Mount Ayr Community high school; Monte AKERS, Kellerton, Grand Valley Community high school; Paul DeBARTHE, Lamoni, Lamoni high school; and, Rick NELSON, Clearfield, Clearfield Community high school.

Kellerton, where robberies occur regularly every few weeks, was the scene of two more early Sunday morning, according to deputy sheriff LaVerne WORTHINGTON, who was called there to conduct an investigation. From Bert's Cafe, owned by Bertha HANKS, were taken 30 cartons of cigarettes, pennies from the cash register and some nickels. At least 10 new tires were taken from the Kellerton Oil Company, owned and operated by Ora FUGATE.

Bert LANE, Poe township farmer, was injured Monday afternoon in a tractor accident southeast of Mount Ayr. Mr. LANE was within a quarter mile of his home when the accident happened. He was driving a tractor, attached to which was a trailer, and as he descended a hill, the trailer jack-knifed and caused the tractor to overturn. Mr. LANE was thrown on to the gravel road, where he was found by Robert SALTZMAN, who heard the crash while working on a fence nearby. X-rays revealed that Mr. LANE suffered fractures of five ribs, collar bone and a finger and numerous contusions. Mr. LANE is an elder of the R.L.D.S. Church in Mount Ayr.

Ringgold County again has the distinction of being the first county in the state of Iowa to meet its goal in the 1964 American Cancer Society Crusade. The county's quota of $1,830 was reached under the capable direction of Mrs. Doyle ANDREWS of Mount Ayr and her able assistants.

Donald V. STULL of this city announced his candidacy for sheriff of Ringgold County, subject to the will of the Democratic voters at the primary election to be held June 1, 1964. He is married to the former Dorothy DUNLANY and they have two children, Patti Jane, 15, and Rick, 11.

Jerold L. (Jake) DRAKE has been awarded the right to practice law in Missouri by the State Board of Law Examiners, announcement of which was made Saturday by Marion Spicer, clerk of the Missouri Surpreme Court. Mr. DRAKE, 22 years of age and son of Mrs. Georgia DRAKE of Winterset, has the distinction of being the youngest lawyer in Missouri. A resident of Ringgold county for 21 years, Mr. DRAKE is a graduate of the Mount Ayr Community high school, the University of Missouri College of Arts and Science and the University of Missouri School of Law.

In competition with some of the best high school hurdlers in the state, Rick DEFENBAUGH placed third in that category Friday during the Drake Relays in Des Moines

Eugene RICKER won his preliminary heat in the 100-yard dash but failed to place in the finals as the fifth place winner was timed at 10 flat.
