Tingley fire department members were called to grass and tree fires last Friday and Saturday afternoons. About 4 p.m. Friday they put out a blaze in a tree at the Frank RICHARDS farm about three miles north of town and kept this from spreading. The second call, on Saturday afternoon, was to the Roger MORRISON farm two and one-half miles south of Tingley to prevent the spread of a fire which was burning along a fence row north of the MORRISON house. It burned about one-quarter of a mile before it was brought under control.

When the American hostages in Iran were released last week, one of the most interested groups in Mount Ayr were the students in Mrs. Bette McNEILL'S sixth grade class at the Mount Ayr Community elementary school. For nearly two months now, the students have been following the crisis from day to day and talking about it in their homeroom. The interest in the hostages came into special focus in the classroom a few months ago when an article in a newspaper told how Christmas cards could be sent to the hostages to wish them a Merry Christmas. At about the same time, the class members tied yellow ribbons to their desks as a reminder.

Julie JACKSON, a senior at Grand Valley Community High School, has been named a State of Iowa scholar. Miss JACKSON, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert JACKSON, ranked in the 98th percentile of the seniors in the state to receive the honor.

Cynde HICKMAN, a senior at Mount Ayr Community high school, has been named a State of Iowa scholar for 1981. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight HICKMAN, Cynde was named along with 2,396 other high school seniors by the Iowa College Aid Commission.

The Mount Ayr Future Farmers of America chapter received national recognition as one of the chapters in the nation to have 100 percent of the voc-ag students pay FFA dues. The national FFA office sent a cap with a special patch designating the Mount Ayr chapter as a national 100 percent plus chapter for 1981.
