Top two students in the Mount Ayr Community high school graduating class of 1987 are valedictorian Shelly TAYLOR and salutatorian Becky MYERS. Valedictorian Christy SOBOTKA, daughter of Charles and Cawren SOBOTKA, and salutatorian Doug NEWTON, son of Claire and Judy NEWTON, were among the academic honorees at the Diagonal Community high school awards ceremony held May 21 and graduation on May 22. They and Mary RYCHNOVSKY also received scholarship pins given to the three top scholars in the senior class.

Sandy MERCER, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Ernie MERCER of Kellerton,was named as Grand Valley Community high school's valedictorian. Salutatorian was Debra HARRIS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim HARRIS of Grand River.

The resignation of elementary teacher Kerri McALEXANDER was accepted at the May 11 meeting of the Diagonal school board. Affirmation was also given by the board to have volleyball as the fall sport in 1987 instead of softball as it had been previously. No coach has been designated as yet.

Shannon City celebrated its 100th anniversary over the Memorial Day weekend with a host of centennial activities.

The top 10 students from the graduating class of 1987 from Mount Ayr Community high school were Melanie MURPHY, Madonna FARRELL, Shelly TAYLOR, Kelly HENSLEY, Angie SMITH, Angie THOMAS, Becky MYERS, Melanie TRULLINGER, Corey BICKERS and Becky HALEY.

Blockton's United Methodist Church will close its doors this week after 88 years of serving the community. Members of the church will merge with the United Methodist Church in Redding.

The Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish at Maloy has received a $1,600 grant from Hands Across America for food for the needy project.

Three from Ringgold county have qualified for the junior national Tae Kwon Do tournament in Tulsa, OK June 18, 19 and 20. Lance BARKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan BARKER of Benton; Regan MASON, son of Cathy MASON of Tingley, and Becky HALEY, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Robert HALEY of Mount Ayr won honors at the May 16 State Junior Nationals Qualifying Tournament held at South YMCA in Des Moines.
