Three current Mount Ayr Community high school FFA chapter members were presented their Iowa Farmer degrees at the state leadership conference in Des Moines last week. They included Tim SCHAEFER, Karen ELMER and Ryan YODER. Also receiving the was was MACHS graduate, Dana WEEDA.

Two Ringgold county students received recognition in the Des Moines Register's annual academic all-state listing this year. Receiving honorable mention as the person nominated by their school district for the honor were Elisa Joy JONES of Kellerton, a senior at Mount Ayr Community high school, and Becky WERNER of Diagonal, a senior at Diagonal Community high school. The students were on the honorable mention [list] for southwest Iowa schools. The listing were included in the Sunday Register.

Each year the Mount Ayr Lions Club presents the Arion award to the instrumental music student chosen by a committee as the top senior student in the school band program. At the spring concert Monday night, Amy SHAFER was presented the award. SHAFER is a trumpet player and has a long string of division I ratings in solo and ensemble contests and was the outstanding Class 2A jazz soloist at the Southwesern Community College jazz festival this past year.

Some 50 marchers carrying such signs as "Family Farms Not Factory Farms" marched from Poe Hollow Park to Mount Ayr Wednesday, April 19, as part of a caravan and march to the National Rural Conference in Ames this week. Mount Ayr was the first evening stopover for the group and a meeting was held at the Ringgold county courthouse that drew about 80 people to talk about fighting large livestock production facilities.

Three Mount Ayr Community high school Raider track team members have qualified to participate in the Drake Relays at Drake University in Des Moines this weekend. To qualify, a high school student must have had one of the top performances in the state in the event. Representing Mount Ayr Community high school will be Clint DREDGE, shot put; Chip BRUNDAGE, discus; and Chip WILLIAMS, 100-meter dash. This is the second year in a row for BRUNDAGE to participate in the Drake event.
