Lynn OBERMEIER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. H. OBERMEIER of Tingley, has been chosen by the Tingley unit of the American Legion Auxiliary as its representative at Hawkeye Girls State, to be held June 18-24 in Cedar Falls. Lynn is a junior in the Mount Ayr Community high school and an honor roll student. She is a member of the girls glee club, madrigal, Harmonettes, sextet and the marching Raiderettes, and is the leading scorer on the girls basketball team.

Students who ranked in the upper 20 percent of this year's graduating class of the Mount Ayr Community high school were Mary BLACK, Louise BURCHETT, Joe DENHART, Carolyn DRAKE, Gay Lou FERGUSON, Ed HOFFMAN, Judy McGAHUEY, John PETERSON, Carolyn PRITCHARD, Patty RICE, Evelyn RYCHNOVSKY, H. Don SMITH, Dick STEPHENS, Joann STRINGHAM, Betty WALLACE and Richard WAUGH.

Ringgold county was included in the various communities in the state which were swept early Sunday morning by tornadoes, high velocity winds and hail. The storm moved into Mount Ayr about 7 a.m. and caused damage to trees and a few windows. As the storm moved east and northeast of Mount Ayr, a tornado funnel touched down at the Charles LESAN farm, three miles east of Mount Ayr, twisted a large barn and moved it from its foundation. Seven window panes on the north and south sides of the house were blown out and evergreen trees were twisted in two and uprooted. A year-old Brittany Spaniel dog, chained to the dog house near the LESAN farm dwelling, was swept away by the force of the wind when the chain was broken. The dog was not seen until 54 hours later when she was found one-half mile east of the house, entangled in an old woven wire fence. Mr. LESAN said she was weak, hungry and thirsty, but apparently all right. The hailstorm varied in intensity with the heaviest losses indicted in the Beaconsfeld and Grand River vicinities. Roofs were heavily damaged by the hail which made holes in which both hands could be inserted. Some hailstones measured as much as two and one-half inches in diameter. It is estimated that insurance claims will number at least 200.

A big percentage of Ringgold county farmers will participate inthe federal government’s emergency feed grain program for 1961, according to the county ASC committee. A total of 515 farmers (36 percent) filed applications to participate during the township sign-up meetings.

Floyd JACKSON announced the opening of the downtown Rogers Oil Station on Saturday, April 29. Mr. JACKSON, who recently purchased the station, will give away two cases of oil and will serve refreshments throughout the day. The business will be known as the JACKSON Service Station.
