Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Mount Ayr Community school students had questions for Ringgold county's own astronaut Dr. Peggy WHITSON and she and her Russian cosmonauts crewmates had answers in a 20-minute exchange held Tuesday afternoon. A total of 14 students, selected from their grade level because of the question they had for the residents of the International Space Station, found out information on topics of their interest in a videolink which was broadcast over the NASA television channel.

Several changes will be in store around the Mount Ayr square when people visit the Autumn in the Ayr celebration this week. Work is being done to restore the fronts of four buildings on the southeast corner of the square as part of an effort to spruce up the square. At the Mount Ayr Public Library a new memorial park bench has been installed to provide a spot to stop and read or rest. Several new park benches are also being placed around the Ringgold county courthouse lawn as part of another project.

Mount Ayr will have a new postmaster October 4 when David RICHARDS takes over as officer in charge. RICHARDS will be replacing current postmaster Mike DURRELL who will be the officer in charge at Osceola on October 7. RICHARDS has been a mail carrier for 20 years.

The pasture walk held recently at the Jim and Ann WERNER farm allowed farmers to gain additional techniques on how beef cattle can be weaned, pastured and how to incorporate a variety of options when managing a beef cow herd. Craig HAYS gave a demonstrationon the use of ultrasound technology. A group of 60 interested individuals participated in the program.

Breadeaux Pizza and Dollar General Store were welcomed by the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce with ribbon cuttings recently.

When the NASCAR Busch Series race is held Saturday at Kansas Speedway in the Kansas City area, the grandson of Ringgold county residents will be one of the drivers.
