RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 26, 1986

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ringgold county's first armed bank robbery in a number of years took place Friday when the First State Bank office in Diagonal was robbed at gunpoint. A lone gunman entered the bank at about 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and escaped with about $2,700, according to Ringgold county sheriff Lyle MINNICK.

Volunteers joined with Mount Ayr city crew members to haul away 36 truck loads of brush and other junk from the Mount Ayr community during the clean-up campaign last week.

A chance for families to share some stress-free time together is being planned in Diagonal Sunday, June 29, sponsored by the Jolly Jinglers 4-H Club. Featured among the many activities will be a special inspirational presentation by Johnny ORR, head coach of the Iowa State University men's basketball team.

Thirteen-year-old Cory FRENCH of Mount Ayr took first place in the competition and about $400 was raised for the Ringgold County Group Home at Croquemania II, the second annual croquet tournament held in Mount Ayr this weekend. Second place in the tournament went to Gary SOBOTKA of Mount Ayr and John LARSON of Mount Ayr placed third.

A Ringgold county youngster was selected as the local winner of the under two age group in a photo contest sponsored by Fotos by Frank in Creston. Tory WALKUP Mount Ayr won the division of the Southwest Iowa Children's Portrait Contest.

Emily McALEXANDER, a student at Mount Ayr Community high school, has been named a United States National Award winner in math. She was nominated for the award by Rebecca HANNASCH, high school math instructor.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert BASTOW of Mount Ayr recently won a free trip to Europe in a drawing held by the Jefferson bus line. The BASTOWS, who operate Top-Notch Tours of Mount Ayr, were entered in the contest for their use of the bus line for the bus tours they organize.

Newcomers welcomed by MARC '86 representative, Mrs. J. H. EDDY, are the Alan CAREY family. Alan works at Miracle Recreation and his wife has contracted to teach English and Spanish at Diagonal.
