RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 26, 1980

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ringgold county recorded its first traffic fatality of the year early Saturday morning when Richard Lee HARTMAN, 37, of Benton died of injuries received in a motorcycle accident nine miles west of Mount Ary on a county gravel road. HARTMAN was found lying along the side of the gravel road south of the Mike SCHAEFER residence a little after 1:15 a.m. Saturday morning by Bob and Jeannie SWARTWOOD. He apparently lost control of the Honda motorcycle while traveling north on the road.

According to Mount Ayr sheriff's office, the SWARTWOODS offered to take him to the hospital, but he wanted to go to his home in Benton, where they took him. He collapsed at home and was dead on arrival at Ringgold County Hospital in the Ringgold county ambulance after suffering internal injuries in the accident.

After win number 102 for Shelley COLLIER, pitcher for the Mount Ayr Community high school Raiderettes softball team, team members and parents celebrated with a cake and COLLIER was presented with the game ball of her 100th win during the Diagonal Invitational tournament over the weekend. Presenting the cake to Shelley and the team Monday night was high school principal Clyde SUMMERS.

An integrated heating system, patented by an Afton inventor and manufactured in Mount Ayr, is coming off the assembly line here at the rate of 30 a day now -- two months into production. It's all part of a story in which a number of Ringgold countians have a stake that began with Dean FREIHAGE of Afton, who has patented the process whereby the energy stored in the home hot water heater is harnessed to also provide heating for the home.

Dollar-Wise Ltd. is the name of the company which is selling the new furnaces guaranteed to cut fuel usage for heating a home by 25 percent and Afton is the headquarters for the operation.

Jack and Mildred ELLIOTT spent last weekend attending the dedication of the Mamie Eisenhower birthplace in Boone. Mrs. ELLIOTT represented the Iowa Federation of Republican women.
