A semester at the University of London, tours to "the continent" and to the USSR, meeting interesting people and
returning with a much-expanded concept of the world -- all these things were anticipated by Stacy CUNNING, an Iowa
State University junior from Mount Ayr, when she left Iowa last August, 1988, to study in England. When she returned
the week before Christmas, she was not only filled with all these once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but she has a
refreshed feeling that makes her look forward to starting her late winter-spring semester in Ames. She was glad to
leave and is happy to be home, she said in an inteview at the Record-News last Tuesday. CUNNING is the daughter
of Dan and Judy CUNNING of MOunt Ayr.
"My most rewarding recollection was being ther to turn the lights on for the farmer for the first time. The look on the
face of the whole family was a great reward for our labor. Usually they had lights on in every room before we left the
farm." This observation was from Robert "Hap" RICHARDS as he looks over almost 42 years as line foreman and lineman
for Rideta Electric Cooperative, Inc. which offices in Mount Ayr. Having completed enough years of service to earn
retirement, RICHARDS is looking forward to spending more time in his woodworking shop. He also won't have to be sharing
as much time with his job and can allow more leisure hours with this wife Marilyn; his daughter, Debbie MURPHY (Mrs Joe);
and his son, David RICHARDS and their families (including three grandchildren). All live in Mount Ayr.
A trash fire at the Frank DAVENPORT home, just north of Mount Ayr Community high school, caught a garage on fire, burning
the north side of it. Mount Ayr volunteer firemen were called to the scene at 2:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23.
A very prestigious honor has recently been bestowed upon a Mount Ayr Community high school student. Senior Sean THOMAS,
son of Robert and Jane THOMAS, has been named first-place winner in the Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution "Good Citizenship" Contest.
