RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 26, 1956

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

The two-story farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard JOHNSTON in Middle Fork township was completely destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The fire, which apparently started in the attic, had spread throughout the upper story when discovered by Mrs. JOHNSTON about 6 a.m.

The Mount Ayr Fire Department was summoned and neighbors responded quickly to the alarm and joined in helping remove furniture and keeping the flames from spreading to other buildings.

Approximately 10 acres of ground were plowed April 12 for John REYNOLDS, who has been ill for several months. The six men with tractors and plows who shared in the "good neighbor" deed were Rex SICKELS, Leland SICKELS, Clem SHEIL, Hayden SMITH, C. D. LAMB, and Lew REYNOLDS.

Sixteen men went Tuesday afternoon of last week to the farm of L. A. STRANGE and finished the plowing for Mr. STRANGE, who has been ill for the past three months. Assisting with the work were Harry JONES, Verl WATTS, Howard YASHACK, Gerald GARDNER, Fred SOBOTKA, Charlie RICKER, Vern KNIGHT, Ralph LONG, Vern LONG, George STILL, George FLEMING, Clarence MORRISON, Jim KRISINGER, Junior DREDGE and Bob and Ray STRANGE.

Eight of nine persons, the occupants of two autos, were injured Monday night in a head-on collision on a graveled road, 10 miles northeast of Mount Ayr.

Four girls, all of whom were injured, are members of the Beaconsfield basketball team. They were returning home after having been the guests of honor at a dinner of the Mount Ayr Business and professional Women's Club. The driver of the car, a 1952 Ford, was Duane BROWN of Beaconsfield.

Forest MORGAN of Liberty township was the driver of the other car, a 1953 Chevrolet. With him were his wife and sons, Jimmy, 10, and Jackie, three. Jackie was the only one who escaped injury.

Those injured in the accident were Helen WADDELL, Sharon BROWN, LaVerna WADDELL, Barbara LONG, Duane BROWN, Forest MORGAN, Cleo MORGAN and Jimmy MORGAN.
