A number of awards were presented when the Ringgold County Soil and Water Conservation district commissioners held their annual awards banquet Saturday, Nov. 19. Named outstanding cooperators for the district this year were Duane and Iona TRIGGS and Mark and Lynda TRIGGS.

Among major award winners at the annual Ringgold county 4-H awards program Sunday were Richard FARIS, Amy HYNEK, Amanda WERNER, Abby STEPHENS, Amy SCHLAPIA, Tara SHIELDS, Shannon NORRIS, Holly MEESTER, Andrea BENTLEY, Ashley ADAMS, Landi McFARLAND and Clint WHITTINGTON.

A Ringgold county sheriff's deputy is among 40 Iowa law enforcement officers from departments across the state to graduate from the 171st basic training class at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Johnston. Jamie Lynn McLEAD, 36 of Kellerton, one of the deputies working for the Ringgold county sheriff's office, was one of the graduates.

Sharon BECKER of Osceola, a former area resident, has received a number of awards recently for her poetry and art work. BECKER is the daughter of Grant and Norma BECKER of Grand River, a 1970 graduate of Grand Valley Community high school and a 1974 graduate of Graceland College in Lamoni.

Ringgold county residents are taking the lead in the Business Professionals of America organization at Southwestern Community College in Creston. New officers include Stephanie SMITH, Derby. Student Senate representative: Tara SHIELDS, Mount Ayr, treasurer; Amy SCHLAPIA, Diagonal, president; Virginia PARIS, Mount Ayr, vice-president; and Jami HIGHTSHOE, Mount Ayr, secretary.

Ashley INGRAM, a Mount Ayr Community eighth grader, participated in the 1999 OPUS honor choir concert at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium on the Iowa State University campus in Ames last week. INGRAM, the daughter of Dwight and Julie INGRAM of Mount Ayr, was nominated for the choir while living in Winterset last spring.

Mount Ayr Community high school cross country coach Ron LANDPHAIR has been named to a coaching award following the 1999 cross country season. The team qualified for the state cross country meet and placed 12th in the state in Class 1A this past fall.
