Dorothy and Howard WELCH light up the countryside each Christmas season with the lighting display at their home north of Redding. There are now approximately 17,200 light bulbs in different sizes on the WELCH property to light up various Chrismas scenes. The WELCHES will begin taking down the lights this week so they can get them all put away in an orderly fashion for next year's holiday.

A Mount Ayr Community high school senior has been awarded a scholarship to attend the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls to study phyics. Jarred TRULLINGER was named to receive a $4,400 McKay physics scholarship in the 34th annual UNI science, mathematics and technology symposium held last month.

Amy WALKUP, daughter of Dale and Sharon WALKUP of Redding, will be spending the spring semester stuyding in the Netherlands on the international studies program administered there by Central College at Pella. WALKUP is a sophomore elementary education major at Central College.

Winners were named in the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce's annual residential Christmas lighting contest. Taking first place was the home of Bill and Rena SMITH at 703 East Monroe.

Mount Ayr Community and Diagonal girls basketball players rank high as individuals and in team rankings in state statistics released this week by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

In team statistics, the Raiderettes ranked 26th in the state in defense, holding opponents to 37.8 points per game and 56th in offense, scoring 60.8 points per game. The Raiderettes were also 35th in field goal percentage, making .445 of their shots.

Diagonal was listed in free throw and three point shooting team statistics. The Maroonettes, rank 14th in three-point goals per game with 3.26 and 31st in free throw shooting percentage with .632.
