RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, October 24, 2002

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Ringgold County Secondary Roads, with the initiative of Rex and Ann WALTERS, purchased and mounted signs for Beaconsfield, the home of Astronaut Peggy WHITSON on Tuesday. Six signs were placed throughout the county directing traffic to Beaconsfield. The signs were printed at Iowa Prison Industries in Anamosa.

Work has been completed onthe outside of the new home for the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce, Ringgold County Development Corporation and Ramsey Farm Foundation on the east side of the square in Mount Ayr. The building is the former doctor's office for Dr. Frank Henry LANDES, who began his practice in Benton in 1897 and moved it to Mount Ayr in 1926 where he continued to practice until his death in 1948. The work on the building and many others around the square in Mount Ayr came in part through a grant through the National Trust for Historic Preservation made by Dr. Helen LUYBEN, Dr. LANDES; granddaughter.

The Mount Ayr Medical Clinic will have another physician joining its staff. Dr. Lance BARKER, D.O., aboard certified internist, is scheduled to begin his practice in early December. BARKER, a graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, is presently an internal medicine physician at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A third arson case is under investigation by Ringgold County Sheriff's Department officers after an incident Sunday, Oct. 6. At approximately 3:50 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, a Sunday paper delivery person notified Rod HOLMES of Kellerton that a van he owns was on fire in his driveway. The Ringgold County Sheriff's Office and the State Fire Marshall's Office, along with an agent with the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agency, have determined this was arson and are still conducting an investigation in to the cause of the fire. The 1997 Dodge van, parked at 308 Appanoose in Kellerton, was destroyed by the fire.

Ringgold County Supportive Services had 12 individuals participate at the Special Olympics held October 12 at Davidson Lanes in Creston. Those participating were Mary CALDWELL, Sharon LESAN, Danny REYNOLDS, Joe HALEY, Anita GILSON, Dennis RINEHART, Ralph HAMPTON, Eddie EATON, Don CLARK, Linda JACKSON, Joan ROUTH and Sara BALLANTYNE.

Ringgold County Farm Bureau received the Governor's 10-year Volunteerism Award at a ceremony recently in recognition of its continued dedication to the Iowa Department of Transportation's Adopt-A-Highway program.
