Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, March 24, 1983

by Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Six Mount Ayr Community high school students qualified for the national Office Education Association conference in Chicago, IL in April at the state OEA meeting in Des Moines last week. Representing the MAC chapter in competition at the nationals will be Beth FLETCHALL, Cheryl CARLSON, Susan BUCKNER, Alan BAKER, Pat HENDERSON and Jerald YEAROUS.

Other Mount Ayr Community Office Education Association students who placed in Contests at the state conference were Michelle LLEWELLYN, Barb POTTORFF, Tammy CANNON, Alan BAKER, Ben KNAPP, Beth FLETCHALL, Amy SCHAFER, Mary Jean ENGLAND and Lance LANE.

Four Contel employees have recently retired from Contel, the telephone firm that serves Mount Ayr, and a retirement banquet was held recently at Small Corral. Retirees include Mary Katharine BAGLEY, Faye Lucille SIPLE, Helen LUCHSINGER and Elowene Irene CANNON.

Several special awards were presented at the annual Ringgold County 4-H leaders banquest held Monday. Larry McALEXANDER received a special certificate for his past service to the 4-H program and Alan SMITH was named an honorary 4-H member. Mrs. Mildred SMITH was also named an honorary 4-H member and Milt HENDERSON was presented with a plaque honoring his years of service to 4-H and the youth of Ringgold county.

A Mount Ayr Community junior high school student won the chance to compete in the state spelling bee at the Green Valley Area Education Agency 14 spelling bee in Creston. Leslie BARKER, a seventh grader and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan BARKER of Benton, placed third among the competitors from schools across Area 14.

James F. CLOUGH of the Kellerton area effectively averted a near disaster in the Phil YOUNG home north of Afton March 15. CLOUGH was doing electrical work in the attic when YOUNG'S 96-year-old mother, the only other person in the house, noticed fire in an enclosed porch on the main floor. Braving highly toxic fumes and smoke from burning plastics, Jim moved first to save the family dog, a Golden Retriever that had just undergone surgery, quickly removed and put out the heart of the fire, then in unfamiliar surroundings foud a coat for Grandma as she stood outside in the chill. The fire was of unknown origin and damage to the house was minimal.

Birth reported at Ringgold County Hospital this week:

  • A daughter, born March 15, to Mr. and Mrs. Darrell KLEIN, Eagleville, MO
