RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 24, 1982

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Harold NESS, Jr. escaped what could have been serious personal injury about 11:55 a.m. Friday, June 18, when he awakened from a noon nap to find the living room of his upstairs apartment filled with smoke. He and John REYNOLDS share an apartment they rent from Gary SAVILLE at 504 East Adams Street in Mount Ayr. The SAVILLE family lives downstairs. NESS escaped serious injury but did suffer from the effects of smoke inhalation. One fireman, Bill THOMPSON, developed back problems.

Susan HUGHES, Ringgold county beef queen, was named district 18 beef queen at a contest in Creston Saturday night. HUGHES, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlen HUGHES of Mount Ayr, competed with county queens from three other counties to win the district title that qualifies her for the state contest in Des Moines in December. Cindy Ann HOWARD of Lorimor was named district beef princess as runner-up.

Ringgold county sent an ambulance and crew to assist with the evacuation of train-derailment disaster victims in Emerson in the early morning of Tuesday, June 15. It was one of some 250 ambulance services from Iowa and Nebraska that answered a call for help as heavy rain caused flooding, which in turn cause a train derailment. A crew of John SCHAFER, Mike McGRATH, Rick HAWKINS and Ed DEFENBAUGH answered a call for help sent through the Union County Sheriff's Office about 3:55 a.m.

Ron GREEN is the new manager at the Mount Ayr Manufacturing Compnay, replacing Jewel POTTORFF of Hatfield, MO who is retiring. GREEN has been an employee of Grant City, Manufacturing Company for the past 10 years.

Dr. Carlin LAWHEAD, who is finishing one year of residency as a dentist at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Iowa City, as of July 1, 1982, will enter private practice in Muscatine. LAWHEAD, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles LAWHEAD of Mount Ayr, will be associated with a father and son -- Dr. John and Dr. Bob TREVARTHEN. Interestingly, Dr. John was a classmate of Dr. Charles LAWHEAD and Dr. Bob, a classmate of Dr. Collus LAWHEAD (Carlin's brother) at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Gail MAPES, a member of the Mount Ayr police department, recently completed a 10-week session at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge. He received two awards, the Robert Klaes Award for congeniality, voted by his classmates, and also received an award in recognition of conscientious performance from instructors and staff members. Academy officials said it was very rare that one person was awarded both awards.
