Cheryl NEWTON has been selected by the auxiliary of Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion, to attend Girls State, which will be held June 18-24 in Cedar Falls. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam NEWTON of this city, Cheryl is a junior in the Mount Ayr Community high school. Leadership ability, personality and scholarship were considered in selecting Cheryl for the coveted honor.

Three Mount Ayr Community high school students received I ratings at the state speech contest held in Atlantic. Carolyn DRAKE and Judy McGAHUEY received I's in interpretative prose reading and Barbara SACKETT scored the top rating in oratorical declamation. Ratings of II were received by Betty SACKETT in oratorical declamation and Carolyn DRAKE in original oratory.

Twelve basketball lettermen have been announced by coach Dale HERRINGTON of the Mount Ayr Community high school. They are Dick HERRINGTON, Ron SHIELDS, John PETERSEN, Mike ARCHIBOLD, Rich HORNE, Don CORLL and Denny JOHNSON, seniors; Don SMITH, Bob ALLEN, Gary KEPLINGER and Paul RUCKMAN, juniors; and Jerry WAUGH, sophomore.

A total of 124 athletes and cheerleaders of the Mount Ayr Community high school will be honored Monday night at the annual all-sports banquet.

  • March 17, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. PALMER, Lamoni
  • March 21, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis STURM, Clearfield
  • March 22, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Harold FROST, Beaconsfield
