Taking first place this year in the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce's annual lighting contest was the home of Berneeta AUSTIN. The display proclaims the good news of the Christmas season. Second place went to the home of Bob and Sheila SHAFER and third place to the home of Norman and Doris KLEJCH.

Lee FARIS of Mount Ayr was elected president of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and his daughter, Jennifer FARIS, was crowned a beef princess at the annual conventions of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and the Iowa CattleWomen's Association in Des Moines last week. Lee's wife, Martha, was named district CowGal at the meeting as well.

A feature story tells of Otto, a new resident in the home of Todd and Jill JACKSON of Mount Ayr. Otto is a two-year-old Golden Retriever, a service dog from Canine Companions for Independence and he helps Jill move around the house or perform others of the 50 commands he knows.

The Mount Ayr City Council hired Scott SWISER, an attorney from the firm of Wilson and Christiansen, as the new city attorney, replacing David CHRISTENSEN.

Army reserve Pvt. Jessica J. BRUNDAGE has completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. BRUNDAGE is the daughter of Richard and Betty BRUNDAGE of rural Mount Ayr.

A card shower is being held for Dan and Chin Hui BARKER of Benton for their 25th wedding anniversary. The BARKERS were married Dec. 23, 1968 in Seoul, Korea.

Diagonal's Maroonettes ended their pre-holiday season 3-1 when they picked up a win over Lenox. Cindy GOODALE had four three-pointers on he way to 15 point to lead scoreres. Heather O'KELLEY had six points and Courtney GARRETT added five. Jennifer BUTLER led in rebounds with 10.

The Maroons fell to Lenox 78-68 in action this week. J. P. WHITTINGTON had 23 points and 12 rebounds. Nick NELSON chipped in 20 points.

The Raider wrestlers picked up three wins by falls in their match with Interstate 35 recently. Ryan WILT pinned Bryan COOPER in 1:36 in the 112 match: Steven STULL pinned Steve HAUG in 4:30 in the 140 pound class; and Jacobs KNIGHT pinned Chad WALKER in 2:30 in the 145 pound class in the match for the only Raider points.
