Familiar voices at the other end of the line when you dial the operator will be a thing of the past with the latest change made by Continental Telephone of Iowa. The toll operation center in the Mount Ayr telephone office was closed last week, part of a trend in the company to close its small toll operations, company officials said this week.

Winners in the annual Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the Mount Ayr Community Improvement Club were Mr. and Mrs. Dwight HICKMAN, first place; Mr. and Mrs. Dan LUTRICK, second place; and Mr. and Mrs. Larry GILES, third place.

Mount Ayr Parts, located on the west side of the square in Mount Ayr, won first place in the commerical division.

Cleo LYNCH was honored for his service to the Ringgold County Hospital board of directors upon his retirement from the board at a meeting of the hospital board recently.

Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block has named Mildred ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr as one of four new members to the National Advisory Council on Rural Development.

Births reported at Ringgold County Hospital:

  • A daughter, born Dec. 13, to Mr. and Mrs. Lannie HOWIE, Redding.
  • A son, born Dec. 14, to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Joe ROUTH, Mount Ayr.
  • A son, born Dec. 16, to Mr. and Mrs. Dave GILLILAND, Grant City, MO.
