RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 23, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Another county landmark disappeared this week when the Maloy school was demolished. The brick building was built in 1917 at the cost of $20,000 and was equipped with "manual training" and "domestic science" facilities, as well as what was then an excellent gymnasium. The building was built when rural schools in the area joined to become the Maloy Consolidated School District.

The go-ahead for construction of the new group home for handicapped adults in Mount Ayr was given at a pre-construction meeting earlier this month. The land has been graded and actual construction is expected to begin soon on the building, which will have a completion date in September.

Robert "Hap" RICHARDS of Mount Ayr was honored by fellow employees at Rideta Electric Cooperative for 40 years of service. An office get-together April 9 recalled his faithful performance of duties as lineman and in his present job as line foreman.

Daryl HOLDEN of Mount Ayr has been presented a 15-year service award by the Iowa Department of Transportation. HOLDEN is currently the Highway Maintenance supervisor with the Iowa DOT's Mount Ayr maintenance garage. HOLDEN resides in rural Mount Ayr.

Patty TAYLOR of Diagonal was among the 37 local homecoming queens who were interviewed and judged in the seventh annual Homecoming Queen Selection held April 4-5 at the Airport Hilton in Des Moines. She didn't win but had the thrill of seeing her roommate, Mary Frances VEREN of Cedar Rapids high school, take first place. Three runners-up also were named.

Jerry NOBLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin NOBLE of Mount Ayr, has been named a United States National award winner in the area of band, according to an announcement received from the United State Achievement Academy. NOBLE, who is a junior of Mount Ayr Community high school, was nominated for this national award by Martin ALDRICH, band instructor.

Emily McALEXANDER, a Mount Ayr Community high school junior and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene McALEXANDER of rural Beaconsfield, has been selected as a member of the state 4-H council for 1987-88. She and Doug HICKMAN of Mount Ayr were among the 14 interviewed at Atlantic March 23. McALEXANDER is a member of the Country Clovers and Beacon Bombers 4-H clubs in Ringgold county.

A Mount Ayr veteran was awarded the Purple Heart almost 42 years after he was wounded in action during World War II in ceremonies at the Mount Ayr American Legion building Saturday. Bill RUSK awarded the medal to Wallace MORELAND of Mount Ayr, who was wounded May 22, 1945 in Okinawa, where he was serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. MORELAND was also given the World War II Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal, World War II Victory Medal and World War II Rifle Marksman Badge.

Four Ringgold County youth have been selected to attend Boys and Girls State as representatives of the Mount Ayr American Legion and Auxiliary. The youth are Jerry NOBLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin NOBLE; Jamie STRINGHAM, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald STRINGHAM of Benton; Tracy STEPHENS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don STEPHENS of Redding; and Shelly JONES, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken JONES of Mount Ayr. Alternate is Leslie BARKER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan BARKER of Benton. This is the first time the Auxiliary has sent two young women.

Michael ALLEY, 37, became Rideta Electric Cooperative's new member service director April 1. He came to Rideta from Princeton, MO where he had been employed by Grundy Electric Cooperative for 18 years.
