Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Sim Clay RICE, son of John W. and Sara RICE, was born December 8, 1885 on a farm near Mount Ayr. He passed away suddenly Sunday evening, Dec. 18, 1960, from a coronary occlusion at the age of 75 years and 10 days. The past three years he had served as mayor of Mount Ayr, tendering his resignation only a few days before his final illness.

Larry SCHLAPIA of Diagonal and Wilbur FARIS of Mount Ayr were re-elected as members of the board of directors of the Creston 4-H Market Swine show during its annual meeting in Creston. As members of the board, SCHLAPIA and FARIS represent Ringgold county in furthering plans for the important 4-H event scheduled for March 5, In previous years, Ringgold county 4-H club members have provided strong competition in the various division of the show.

Doyle SCOTT, deputy sheriff, has been named by the board of supervisors as patrol operator out of Diagonal. He succeeds Rodney DAVIS, who recently resigned.

Sheriff-elect Elbert STRANGE announced the appointment of LaVerne WORTHINGTON as deputy sheriff of Ringgold County.

Mrs. John McGILVREY of Mount Ayr won first prize in the Mohawk free rugs for Christmas event, sponsored by the Mount Ayr Furniture Co. McGILVREY won a 9x12 rug from the looms of Mohawk. Second and third place winners were Mrs. James VERPLOEUGH of Tingley and Mrs. Darrell POWERS of Kellerton, each of who received a 27x36-inch "Tommy" Mohawk rug.

Dr. D. E. MITCHELL last week purchased the Willie BOLTON 160-acre farm in Jefferson township. The transaction was made through the W. B. CUNNING Co.

The W. B. BUELL 160-acre farm one and one-half miles southwest of Diagonal, was sold last week to Marvin FOGLE of New Jersey. The transaction was made through the Carl G. RIGGS Agency of Tingley.

James Milo TURNER, a native of Ringgold county, was appointed mayor of Mount Ayr at a called meeting of the town council Monday afternoon. He succeeds Sim C. RICE, whose death occurred Sunday evening, one week after he had tendered his resignation.
