Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, September 20, 1962

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Len R. BEATH and Mrs. Ray STANLEY were initiated as honorary members of the Ringgold county 4-H organization at the first county 4-H conference, held September7.

Approximately 300 persons came Saturday to Mount Ayr to share in the observance of the 75th anniversary of the Ringgold Mutual Insurance Association and to hear an address by Senator Bourke B. Hickenlooper.

The horse show, held Sunday afternoon at the fairgrounds north of Mount Ayr under sponsorship of the Ringgold County Saddle Club, attracted a crowd of approximately 350 spectators. Eighty-six horses were entered in the show by the Union County Saddle Club, Bedford, Guss, Allendale, Grant City and Worth county, Missouri, and the Ringgold County Saddle Club.

Phillip WEBB, 15 years of age, submitted to an emergency operation Saturday night in the Blank Memorial Hospital in Des Moines for a ruptured spleen, suffered in a bicycle accident. The accident happened while Phil was on his way to the skating rink east of Mount Ayr on Highway 2, about 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The wheel chain of the bicycle he was riding broke, the vehicle went out of control and Phil was thrown to the pavement. Presuming that he had suffered only bruises and scratches, Phil returned to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold WEBB, who reside south of Shafer's Service Station, for first aid treatment. About half an hour after returning home, the lad became ill and was taken by his mother to a docto's office for examination. Because he suffered frequent fainting spells, he was taken by ambulance to the Ringgold County Hospital for observation. His condition became worse throughout the day and about eight p.m. he was removed to Des Moines for surgery.

Craig RIGGS, a member of the Tingley Toppers 4-H Club, placed third among 65 judges in the livestock judging contest of the Interstate Show held Tuesday in Saint Joseph, MO. The judging team, composed of Craig, Dan SICKELS, Jim McCREARY and Craig ELLIOTT, was rated in eighth place among 17 teams.

A newly redecorated Rogers Cafe at the east junction of Highways 2 and 169 will re-open for businessat 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Milton HENDERSON of Mount Ayr was elected president of the board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district at the reorganization meeting held Monday morning. He succeeds Norman KLEJCH of Diagonal, who had conscientiously served in that capacity during the past two years.
