Elisa JONES was presented the American Choral Director's Association (ACDA) music award by the Ringgold Singers president Alan SMITH. Elisa is the daughter of Maurice and Marsha JONES.

Two high school graduating classes totaling 53 students will make their way into the world in commencement ceremonies in Ringgold county this weekend. Diagonal Community high school will graduate 11 seniors in a ceremony Friday, May 19, at 3 p.m. in the old gymnasium at the school, and Mount Ayr Community high school will graduate 42 seniors in a ceremony Sunday, May 20, at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Two first place awards were received by the Mount Ayr Record-News in the Iowa Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest at the conclusion of the 1995 convention and trade show in Des Moines Friday. the two first place innings were for class II (weekly and daily newspapers with circulations of 2,001 to 3,500) in the contests for best circulation idea and best classified advertising page. The Record-News has received many awards over the years in other areas but this is the first time that the paper has been recognized for its classified and circulation advertising. In addition, Mount Ayr Record-News publisher H. Alan SMITH was elected president of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation for the coming year.

A number of Ringgold county residents will be recognized for their volunteer efforts at the 13th annual volunteer awards presented to those who volunteered their services to state government programs in southwest Iowa. The volunteers include Velda ADAMS, Ruth EGLY, Inez FERBER, Joe GEPNER, Mary MEYERS, Sylvia MOFFITT, Bonnie PRIEST, Betty SNETHEN, Marie WATSON and Lavena WIMER of Mount Ayr. Also honored was Maxine WERNER of Shannon City. The Ringgold County Neighborhood Center in Mount Ayr will also receive an award.

King and queen of the Diagonal Prom Friday, May 5, were Michael SWIERZ and Becky WERNER, SWIERZ is the exchange student from Poland living with the Roger GODFREY family and WERNER is the daughter of Jim and Ann WERNER of Diagonal.
