RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, May 18, 1961

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Promotion exercises for 136 eighth grade pupils in the Mount Ayr Community school district will be held Thursday afternoon, May 25, in the school auditorium in Mount Ayr. Evangelist Thomas DENNIS will deliver the address entitled, "Twentieth Century Citizenship."

In observance of the 10th anniversary of its establishment, the Ringgold County Hospital will hold open house on Sunday afternoon, May 1. Mrs. Darrell REED, chairman of the Gray Ladies organization and the Special Days' committee, will be assisted by the Gray Ladies in conducting tours of the hospital and serving refreshments of cookies and coffee.

Dick WEEHLER and Eugene RICKER have qualified to represent the Mount Ayr Community high school in the state Class A track meet in Ames. WEEHLER qualified in the 880-yard run and RICKER in the 100-yard dash during the district track meet held Friday night in Perry. WEEHLER, a junior, and RICKER, a freshman, are participating in high school track for the first time this spring. WEEHLER ran the 880 in?2:07.4 to place second at Perry and to establish a new all-time Mount Ayr school record. The old record of 2:08, held by Si JOHNSTON, was made in 1925. RICKER, second in the 100-yard dash, was nipped at the tape in a time of 10.7 seconds. Rick DEFENBAUGH placed fifth in the finals of the high hurdles and the two-mile relay team -- Dan CARR, Jerry POTTORFF, Merritt MINNICK and Ed PINE -- also ranked in fifth place.

A total of 93 boys and girls, who will enter kindergarten this fall in the Mount Ayr Community school district, was registered Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during summer round-up programs held at three centers. On Wednesday at Maloy, 19 pupils were registered by Mary HUMBERT, kindergarten teacher. At Ellston, where Clara Mae BIRD serves as instructor, 23 students registered on Thursday. Mrs. BIRD was unable to assist with the registration as she is confined to her home while convalescing from a broken bone in her left foot. Kathleen FREED, kindergarten teacher in the Mount Ayr center, and her assistants registered 51 children Friday afternoon.
