RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 18, 1981

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Even the train coming to town in 1882 didn't draw as many people to Beaconsfield as the centennial celebration there Saturday and Sunday that brought more than 2,000 people crowding into town to observe the community's 100th year.

Carol WALTERS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex WALTERS of Beaconsfield, was chosen as the queen for the weekend's festivities in a ceremony Saturday morning. First runner-up was Ellen McALEXANDER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene McALEXANDER of Beaconsfield, and second runner-up was Ruth POORE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane POORE of Beaconsfield.

Donnie BRYAN of rural Mount Ayr was made a member of the order of the Arrow, an honorary society in Boy Scouting, in a ceremony May 16. BRYAN is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard BRYAN. He is a member of the Mount Ayr scout troop.

Steve JOHNSON, former vocational agriculture instructor in the Mount Ayr Community schools, received word of appointment on the staff of Iowa State University in Ames. JOHNSON will serve as an advisor in the farm operations department and as an instructor in the ag economics department. Both positions will last throughout the 1981-82 academic year.

Poetry by Bernice ABARR of Redding will be included in the 1981 edition of "Lyrical Iowa," the annual publication of the Iowa Poetry Associaton that includes poems by adults and students.

Lynn FOLTZ of Mount Ayr was part of a group of students majoring in recreational leadership who gave a new look to the student lounge at the Boone campus of Des Moines Area Community College recently.

The members of the campus Recreation Club wanted to do something that would add to the campus and the enjoyment of the students who spent leisure time in the lounge so decided a new decorating job would be in order. It took the club members three days to paint a mural of a rainbow ending in a pot of gold at the foot of a waterfall.

Peggy A. WHITSON of Beaconsfield received a bachelors of science degree with summa cum laude honors at Iowa Wesleyan College's 126th commencement exercises in Mount Pleasant may 23. Peggy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith WHITSON and majored in biology and chemistry.

Miss WHITSON will continue her studies at Rice University in Houston, TX where she had received a fellowship for the four years of study for a doctorate in bio-chemistry.
