With hands in the shape of a deer with antlers and feet flying membersof the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders dance group did the Highland Fling as one of their dance numbers in their program on the Mount Ayr square Saturday night as part of Ayr Days. The Highlanders added plenty of color and Scottish sound to the Scottish heritage celebration here. Princess and prince for the Ayr Days celebration were crowned at ceremonies Saturday morning. Any first grader in the county was eligible to try out for the contest. Princess was Rachel DERSCHEID, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted DERSCHEID of Ellston and prince was Derik WILEY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan WILEY of Mount Ayr. The royalty rode on a float in the parade as part of their honors and received $25 MARC gift certificates.

Three state awards in the Iowa Better Newspaper Contest were awarded to the Mount Ayr Record-News at the fall convention of the Iowa Newspaper Association in Des Moines Sunday. In competition with newspapers with circulations from 2,000 to 4,000, the Mount Ayr Record-News placed third in one writing category and two advertising categories of the contest. The news story by publisher Alan SMITH about the collapse of the grain elevator in Mount Ayr last year received the third place award for best news story in the class. Two advertisements printed in the Mount Ayr Record-News also took third placesin the state wide competition. One advertisement was the Christmas car wash, wax and buff offered by Roberts Auto Body Shop in Mount Ayr and the other was for the family calendars which the Mount Ayr Record-News offered in the Christmas season last year.

Mike GREENE of Mount Ayr has been appointed as Grand Organist of the Iowa Order of the Eastern Star. Mike is serving as organist for the Mount Ayr Chapter, is a Past Master of Faith Lodge of Mount Ayr, Past Patron of Mount Ayr O.E.S., past Rainbow Dad and served as chairman of the Mount Ayr Rainbow board. Mike and his wife, Susan, who teaches vocal music in the Mount Ayr Community schools, have two daughters, Heather and Stephanie.

Top winners in the Mount Ayr Running Classic races Saturday morning at Ayr Days included 10K women's winner Jean MOFFITT of Johnston, 10K men's winner Steve HALTON of Woodburn, walking winner Gary O'DANIELS of Creston, two-mile men's winner Dale BROWN of Maryville, MO and two-mile women's winner Laurel MOE of Mount Ayr.
