A former Ringgold county resident has been named one of four Iowa recipients of the 1997 Milken Family Foundation national educator awards. Jerry WAUGH, high school principal for the Jefferson-Scranton school districts in Jefferson received the award in a surprise assembly at the school recently. This award not only brings prestigious honor given to only 150 educators in the nation this year, but the award included a $25,000 stipend for each recipient.

A former Mount Ayr resident has been named associate director of the United Methodist Foundation in Des Moines. Sandy BRECKENRIDGE of Des Moines was promoted from adminstrative assistant. She has worked ffor the foundation for 11 years. BRECKENRDIGE'S responsibilities include managing the $13 million portfolio of the foundation.

A Ringgold county student is competing on the Graceland College cross country team this year. The Graceland College squad is having one of its best years yet. Chelsea LAVELLE of Kellerton is a member of the team this year. As a freshman, she placed 16th overall in a meet at Simpson College in Indianola recently that the Yellowjackets won.

Logan LARSON, a second grader at Mount Ayr Communbity elementary school, was named first place winner in the first and second grade division of a statewide farm safety poster contest sponsored by The Wellmark Foundation and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

Rev. Robert MATTHEWS of Roseburg, OR will be a guest speaker at the First Baptist Church of Mount Ayr Sunday morning, Oct. 19. Bob was born and raised in the Delphos area, where he attended school and graduated. He served in the U. S. Army for three and one-half years during World War II. He has ministered for the last 50 years in Oregon and California.
