Just as the winter weather decided to wait until February to visit Ringgold County, the first baby of the new year at Ringgold County Hospital didn't make its appearance until Saturday, Feb. 11. Then Jeremy Richard TIPTON was born to Richard and Donna TIPTON with Dr. Duane MITCHELL doing the delivery.

Mount Ayr Community high school's academic decathlon team placed second in competition in Creston Friday. Students participating were Janelle FREIHAGE, Lance BARKER, Brent McCLURE, Jackie FARIS, Eric MOE, Jennifer SCHAEFER and Jamie JONES. Bill HOHLFELD is advisor to the academic decathlon team.

Carol JOHNSTON, formerly of Diagonal, added his sixth consecutive world record in the pole vault for men his age at the master's track and field pole vault competition this year. The Whittier, CA resident now has the world record for men 72, 73, 74, 75, 76 and now 77 years of age. He is vaulting above nine feet. He is a 1929 graduate of Diagonal Community high school, was a four-year letter winner in track at Drake University from 1930-33 an did his graduate work at the University of Southern California, where he competes withthe USC Master Track & Field Club. JOHNSON is the uncle of Mrs. Bob ERICKSON of Mount Ayr, the nephew of Mrs. Clyde JOHNSTON of Mount Ayr and a cousin of Emanuel HAYDEN, Mrs. Donald BUTT and Vern JOHNSTON of Diagonal and Judy JOHNSTON of Mount Ayr.

Mount Ayr Community high school senior Jeff LUTRICK signed a national letter of intent to play football and receive a scholarship from Missouri Western State College in Saint Joseph, MO, in a ceremony in Mount Ayr Friday. LUTRICK has been recruited as a lineman to play with the MWCS Griffins. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan LUTRICK of Mount Ayr.

To celebrate Valentine's day at the Mount Ayr Meal Site Tuesday, a king and queen for the day were chosen. Named Valentine king and queen were Glen and Velma CALDWELL of Mount Ayr.
