Mr. and Mrs. Ernie JOHNSON of Indianola will assume their duties as managers of the Clinton Motel in Mount Ayr on October 20, according to an announcement by Clinton and Mabel RICE, owners of the motel. The RICES also announced that Mrs. Vera ARNOLD of Corydon has been employed as manager of Hotel Mount Ayr, the duties which she will assume today (Thursday)., Mrs. ARNOLD succeeds Mrs. Marie TODD, who had capably served in the capacity of manager for the past three and one-half years. Mrs. ARNOLD is a sister-in-law of Harry GARRET, a justice of the Iowa Supreme Court.

Dr. Ronald D. SCHMIDT announces the grand opening of his office for the practice of optometry at 110 N. Taylor Street, Mount Ayr, on Sunday, Oct. 17. Dr. and Mrs. SCHMIDT, Terry and Sherry, moved to the Mount Ayr community in July and for several weeks he assisted with Dr. George LEE'S practice in Winterset, while Dr. LEE sought relief from hay fever.

The top cow and calf lot in the John and Mary THOMAS registered Herford sale, held Saturday, brought $690. The top bull brought $585 and the top bull calf sold for $250. The top heifer brought $225.

Sheriff Warren A. DRAKE and John HENRY were in Mountain Grove, MO Friday to recover losses in the theft of seven head of calves on September 22 from the Mount Ayr Livestock Market. Mr. HENRY and his brother, Howard, are partners in the ownership and management of the local market. The calves were sold at Mountain Grove September 23, the next day after the theft. Mr. HENRY succeeded in recovering the loss on one calf. Jerry CASTLEBERRY, 46, of Irving, TX has confessed 21 thefts of livestock, including the seven head at Mount Ayr, six head of calves at Leon on September 7 and four head of cattle from Indianola early in September. Mr. CASTLEBERRY, who served five terms in penitentiaries, has been operating in several midwest and southern states.
