In one of the most uncomfortable heat waves in recent years, the temperature soared to 104 degrees on Tuesday, with a high percentage of humidity. For only two of the first 13 days of July temperatures have dropped to the 80s and for the others they have ranged from 90 to 104 degrees. The low reading for the month was 57 on the night of July 8. According to the local weather observer, H. L. CORNELISON, no rain has fallen since June 29, and during that month only 2.80 inches were reported.

Raymond BAKER was named town clerk Monday evewning at a called meeting of the Mount Ayr city council. BAKER was appointed to the position which was left vacant when T. W. DULANY tendered his resignation under date of July 7. Councilmen present for the meeting, which was called by Mayor James MAHAN, George MOSBARGER, Keith FISHER, L. L. LARSEN and BAKER.

The newly elected commander of Ringgold Post No. 172, American Legion, Charles MOREHOUSE, was installed Monday evening. He succeeds Everett REYNOLDS.

Eighteen boys who are identified with the Midget's baseball team, sponsored by teh local V.F.W., were given the opportunity Mondaynight of seeing a double-header baseball game at Pioneer Field in Des Moines. Games were played between the Chicago Cubs and the Des Moines Bruins, and between the Omaha Cardinals and the Bruins. Boys who were privileged to see the games were Tom CLARKE, Joe and Jim DENHART, Dick STUCK, Tom and Jim WARD, Larry PRATT, Jerry DRAKE, Larry and Donnie CORLL, Ronnie WILLEY, Jim BURGE, Jerry DULANY, Neil and Marlin BOLLIN, Jim SEVERIN, Jr. Ronald DEFENBAUGH and Philip RICHMOND.

Jim MARLEY became the hero of the afternoon Sunday when he slammed out a home run with two men on bases in the last of the ninth inning to win the Bedford-Mount Ayr baseball game, played on the local diamond. Kenny JOHNSON pitched for the Vets and Jim JETTER for Bedford.
