Gordon WINKLER, presently an administrative resident at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, was hired as Ringgold County Hospital administrator at a regular board meeting held May 11 at the hospital in Mount Ayr. Sara DROBNICH of Des Moines, from Mercy Network of Health Services, has been acting administrator, since the resignation of Mike LANCTOT March 18.

Two Blockton young men are dead from injuries suffered in a motorcycle-pickup truck collision May 7 at the P-14 "Redding Road" intersection, by the cemetery, at the southeast edge of Blockton. James R. OWINGS, 32, of Rural Route 2, Blockton, owner and operator of the motorcycle, was dead on arrival by ambulance at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, after the 6:05 p.m. accident Thursday. His passenger, David Allen HENRY, 37,of Blockton, died at the hospital before he could be life flighted to Des Moines. Driver of the pickup, Barbara Lou MILLER (Mrs. Tom), 45, of Blockton, was brought to the Ringgold County Hospital where she was treated and released.

Mount Ayr has received a cultural grant for the second year in a row. The Mount Ayr Resource Commission, through the city of Mount Ayr, applied for the grant to help with maintenance of the beautification project begun last year and to help pay for entertainment during the Ayr Days festival in September. The grant for $2,010 was announced Tuesday by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Local matching funds will be used with the grant to develop the projects, according to Jack ELLIOTT. Last year's grant was spent to plant Scottish flower gardens on the courthouse square, to put up the flag poles and flags around the square and to build the planter boxes and trash containers on the corners of the square.

Mount Ayr Community senior David GREENE received the Arion award from the Mount Ayr Lions Club as the MACHS band's most outstanding senior member at the junior high-senior high band concert Monday night. GREENE was also presented with a new award, given by the MC Band Boosters, to students who participate in band all four years.

Denise JOBE of Mount Ayr has been chosen as the 1987 William T. ALDERSON Intern by the American Association For State and Local History (AASLH). Every year AASLH selects one outstanding graduate student from throughout the United States to study in depth the operations of the nation's largest and most active association for historical organizations and museums. JOBE will work at the association's headquarters in Nashville, TN, for 10 weeks from June 15-August 21, 1987.

A discus throw of 150' 3" by Jamie STRINGHAM was the highlight of the Mount Ayr Raiders participation in track meets held at Villisca and Corning. STRINGHAM got off his outstanding throw as he won the event at the Corning meet. Records available show that only three discus throwers in Mount Ayr track history have exceeded this throw. They were Brent GERINGER, Garry WION and John ALLEN. It was also the fourth best throw in southwest Iowa this year, in a chart compiled by the Omaha World Herald.
