Susan BUCKNER, a sophomore of Mount Ayr Community high school, placed first in the extemporaneous speaking contest at the National Office Education Association convention in San Antonio, TX Tuesday afternoon. Senior Teri KRAMER placed fifth and junior Michelle CARLSON placed sixth in the contest as well.

A two-story unoccupied farm house four miles northeast of Tingley was destroyed by fire early Sunday mornning. The house, owned by Harold Ellis HILL of Creston, and its contents -- a small amount of furniture and a deep freeze -- were discovered ablaze by a neighbor about 3:20 a.m. She didn't have a telephone so she walked a mile to another neighbor's and summoned the Tingley fire department. The fire department was able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby barn.

Two accidents, including one where two people were injured, were reported this week by the Ringgold County Sheriff's Department. Edna Mary KEY of Blockton was injured severely and Hazel MERCER of Blockton was treated and released at Ringgold County Hospital after an accident Thursday, May 7, at 9:45 a.m. The accident, five miles southwest of Mount Ayr on highway 169, occurred near the Mary DENNEY residence.

Ralph BRAMMER of rural Redding was driving a 1963 Chevrolet pickup owned by Darrell STEWARD of Mount Ayr which collided with the 1970 Oldsmobile driven by Mrs. KEY. BRAMMER was entering the highway improperly.

Three Ringgold county student nurses will be among 73 students to graduate from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines at commencement ceremonies Friday, May 22. Janell MORGAN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo MORGAN of Kellerton; Kathy HAVER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James HAVER of Mount Ayr and the late Mrs. Kathryn HAVER; and Joan FISHER, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert FISHER of Mount Ayr are among the graduates.

BIRTHS REPORTED FROM RINGGOLD COUNTY HOSPITAL:

  • May 09, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Pete SCHWIENEBART, Tingley
  • May 11, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McNUTT, Mount Ayr
  • May 11, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Francis KARL, Plattsburg MO
