RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, March 13, 1980

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Several outbuildings and 10 lambs and nine ewes were lost in a fire Monday morning, March 10, at the north edge of Tingley. The blaze went unnoticed until it had gotten a pretty good start, Tingley fire chief Billy BRECKENRIDGE said. The acreage north of the schoolhouse included a house which was being readied for occupancy by Ted LIPPOLD, a feed salesman in Ringgold and adjoining counties. Firemen were able to confine the fire to several sheds and a barn. LIPPOLD and his wife, who works in Creston, were not around at the time the fire broke out but carpenters were working in the house. A neighbor turned in the alarm which brought the Tingley fire department to the scene about 8:30 a.m.

Announcement is made this week of the January 1 purchase of the Mount Ayr Concrete plant located on East Columbus Street. New owners are Charles (Chuck) CALHOUN and his son, Steven, who is returning to Mount Ayr from Des Moines where he has been employed at Skeffington's formal wear store. The plant originally built here by Country Boys had been owned by HMS Concrete of Saint Joseph, MO, which operated a number of concrete plants in northern Missouri and southern Iowa.

Shelly REYNOLDS, 17-year-old daughter of Mrs. Barbara REYNOLDS of Mount Ayr, will be participating in the 1980 Miss Iowa Teen USA Pageant. THis will be held at Stouffer's Five Seasons in Cedar Rapids, and qualifiers will be entered in the national pageant to be held in Albuquerque, NM in November of 1980. Miss REYNOLDS is being sponsored by Mount Ayr Security State Bank, Bushman Equipment, Garrity Construction and Andy Johnson Chevrolet-Buick Co. She and other contestants will be judged on civic involvement, school activities, appearance, poise and personality. Her hobbies include horseback riding, water skiing, singing, dancing, bicking, camping and basketball. Contestants must be between 14 and 18 years old, have a B average in school and are asked to participate in the volunteer service program which involves 12 hours of time for some worthwhile charity or civic work.

BIRTHS REPORTED FROM RINGGOLD COUNTY HOSPITAL:

  • March 06, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Warren ANDERSON, Jr., Blockton

Transciption by Sharon R. Becker, October of 2012
