Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Annick MAZEAU, 17, a high school student from southern France is spending the month of August visiting the Eugene McALEXANDER family, who live on a farm three miles north of Beaconsfield. Annick and her exchange sister, Emily McALEXANDER, are enjoying the month learning about each other's culture. There has been a Mount Ayr Garden Club for 60 years. The program, projects and number of members have varied a great deal since the first meeting January 18, 1927 when seven women met to form the organization. Charter members were Margaret CAMPBELL (Mrs. Charles); Ferrah LAWHEAD (Mrs. C. C.); Cora ROBINSON (the last living charter member before she died April 6, 1987); Maude SPENCE; Regina TEDFORD (Mrs. Howard H.); Martha TIMBY, and Luella WILSON (Mrs. Henry H.).

Wishard Chapel, a historic Methodist rural church located at the junction of county road J25 and Highway 169 north of Mount Ayr, celebrated its centennial August 8 and 9. The church was founded in 1887 as the result of enthusiasm developed by evangelistic services conducted in the Side Hill Rural School (still standing) in January of that year. The minister of the Mount Ayr Methodist Church and 86-year-old Rev. James B. WISHARD, a farmer and rural religious leader, cooperated in the effort. Rev. WISHARD assisted in raising funds for the building and it was given the name of Wishard Chapel out of high regard for him.

ALLAY (A Little Love Assures Youth) is the new name chosen for the Ringgold County Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and the Ellston youngster who developed it for a contest sponsored by ten council was presented with a $50 savings bond this week. Heather JENNINGS, 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Ms. Bill JENNINGS of Ellston, was presented the award by ALLAY coordinator Marlee EGLY of Mount Ayr. The group works to prevent child abuse in the county and its developing a parent support group to help those struggling with the challenges of parenthood.

Mount Ayr accounting clerk Elizabeth GREENE received the Iowa Southern Utilities sales representative of the month award for the second time this year recently. She also won the award for April. GREENE had a 354 percent sales increase in appliances over the same month in June 1986 to receive the June award.

Ron SICKELS of Mount Ayr received a plaque from the American Bowling Congress for his outstanding bowling during the 1986-87 bowling season at Lucky Lanes in Mount Ayr. He received the plaque at the annual meeting of the Mount Ayr Men's Bowling Association held August 10 at Lucky Lanes in Mount Ayr.
